Aszia Grimes' family, gathered Sunday to light candles celebrating her life and the light she brought to theirs.
Aszia Grimes is one of the many unsolved murder cases in the city of Rochester.
Sunday, friends and family came together to honor her on what would have been her 28th birthday sharing their favorite memories of her.
“She was always funny and cared about everyone else before herself,” said Grimes’ godson Gage Grimes.
Back in September of 2020, Grimes was found dead in a vacant lot near Orchard Street, three days after she went missing.
Investigators determined she was murdered but the cause of her death and the circumstances leading up to it remain unknown.
Grimes' mother said Aszia was vulnerable, adding that her brain development never progressed beyond that of an eight-year-old.
She weighed just 12 ounces at birth and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at a young age.
Now more than two years later her mother is still grieving from the news.
“There is not a day that goes by, truthfully, and I am not a whiner, quite honestly I am miserable. But when I think of her I cry, all the time,” said Grimes’ mother Debi Tellier, “Because I miss her because I can't hold my baby, my child.”
As gun violence continues to plague the city of Rochester Grimes' mother is praying for the violence to stop so they can finally start getting some answers.
“I miss her more than anything, and nothing can change that, except justice. That will help, but so far we don't have that,” said Tellier, “There is so much going on, every day you look at the news and there's another murder. They can't focus on her because they have to bounce to this. It has to stop somewhere.”
But until then, they will continue to hold Aszia in their hearts.
“Oh we'll never let her go,” said Tellier.
Both Grimes' family and police are asking anyone with information to call 911 or Major Crimes at 585-428-7157.
