Dangerous commute in St. Louis County

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – Road crews are busy Monday morning battling another blast of winter.

Snow and ice overnight into Monday morning is making for some slick and dangerous road conditions. FOX 2 captured MoDOT crews plowing and laying down salt at several different locations around St. Louis County.

MoDOT crews are working 12-hour shifts starting Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. Those crews had their work cut out for them.

There were some very slick and icy areas overnight into Monday morning. One of those areas was the I-270/44 corridor. FOX 2 captured footage of a jackknifed big rig on 270 south at I-44. The incident happened around 1:00 a.m. However, it was nearly 5:00 a.m. before crews were able to clear that scene.

No serious injuries were reported at the scene.

Multiple big rigs were pulled over in that same general area overnight as well. Drivers are having trouble navigating slick highways.

We spoke earlier with drivers about dealing with the road conditions Monday morning. Here is some of what they told us.

“You have to be careful, take your time,” Dwayne Powell explained. You know, try to find, you know, the parts where there is not a lot of snow and slushy stuff on the road. Like I say, just be careful and take your time.”

Allan Calloway added, “Just taking it slow, taking it slow like Wednesday when we had snow on Wednesday. Take it slow, taking it careful, drive the lines where people have been at, there you go – just play it safe, play it being smart.”

MoDOT shared that its crews will keep working 12-hour shifts until the roads are clear and as safe as possible.
