LH No. 9 Women’s Wrestling Crowns Three Champs at Collegiate State Championship
LOCK HAVEN, PA – The nationally-ranked Lock Haven University women’s wrestling team returned to the mats today (Sunday, Jan. 29) as the Bald Eagles competed at the 2023 Pennsylvania Women’s Collegiate Wrestling State Championships, hosted by East Stroudsburg University. The Bald Eagle sent five athletes to the mats, and all five placed among the top-three including three individual champions.
The ninth-ranked Bald Eagles were led by champions – Kaelani Shufeldt (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina), Madison Matta (Blue Ridge, Pa./Waynesboro), and Grace Stem (Snow Shoe, Pa./Bald Eagle).
Lily Sherer (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) was second and Trinity Monaghan (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) was third.
Lock Haven competed alongside in-state opponents from Alvernia, Cedar Crest, Delaware Valley, Gannon, Ursinus, and host ESU, and despite the Bald Eagles limited lineup, the squad finished third in the team standings.
Shufeldt, ranked No. 5 nationally at 109, needed just one match to claim the individual title today, and she downed East Stroudsburg’s Alanna Barberio by tech fall, 10-0.
At 136, Matta used a pair of pins to claim the title. She opened the day by pinning (2:51) Gannon’s Ariana Gonzalez. In the finals, Matta needed just 40 seconds to pin ESU’s Rachel Degiulio.
Stem, ranked 3 at 143 nationally, went 2-0 and won the title. Stem opened the day with a tech fall over Gannon’s Lili Ujfalvi, 12-2, and she collected a win by forfeit in the finals.
Sherer went 1-1 on the way to her second-place finish at 130. She opened the day with a 9-0 win over ESU’s Gianna Amendola, before falling to East Stroudsburg’s Mia Macaluso in a tight 4-2 match.
Monaghan was third at 191. After dropping her first match of the day, she won by forfeit in the third-place bout.
Lock Haven will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 8 when the Bald Eagles travel to Elmira for a 7 p.m. dual. Looking ahead, The Haven will close the regular season at home on Friday, Feb. 10 vs. Hiram.
