18-year-old arrested in connection with Chula Vista homicide that left man dead on bike trail

An 18-year-old man was arrested for fatally stabbing a missing man on Greg Cox Bike Trail in Chula Vista, according to police.

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — San Diego police are investigating the fatal stabbing of a man in Chula Vista Sunday evening.

First responders were called to an area near the 200 block of Rancho Drive and Greg Cox Bike Park around 10:40 a.m. following reports that a person was found dead, according to police.

"Greg Cox Bike Park is the second bike park for the County of San Diego and the first for Otay Valley Regional Park, spanning 3.2 acres," according to the County of San Diego.

Chula Vista police were initially dispatched to the scene due to the location of where the body was found, but, San Diego police officers were later called to investigate as the location fell under its jurisdiction, Chula Vista police told CBS 8.

"...Officers found an obviously deceased male suffering from trauma to his upper body that indicated he was the victim of a violent crime," San Diego police said in a press release.

The victim was reported missing on January 28 by his family, police said.

A family member was searching the area of Greg Cox Bike Trail on January 29, which the victim frequently visited, when the family member found the man stabbed to death, Lieutenant Steve Shebloski shared in a press release.

The victim was identified as 49-year-old Jose Gonzalez of Chula Vista.

An 18-year-old man from Mexico named Milton Daniel Tax Zuzun was accused of the crime.

Officers said the suspect was already in police custody on unrelated charges when the additional charges were brought against him.

"The Chula Vista Police Department arrested that suspect on January 28 for an unrelated vandalism charge in the 200 block of Rancho Drive in Chula Vista," police said.

CBS 8 is working to understand better the incident's timing, when the suspect was released from police custody, and when he allegedly committed the fatal stabbing.
