NFL Rumors: Vic Fangio Hired as Dolphins DC on League's Richest Coordinator Contract

Timothy Rapp

The Miami Dolphins have their defensive coordinator.

The team reportedly agreed to a deal with Vic Fangio that will make him the "NFL's highest-paid coordinator," per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network.

Mike Klis of 9News reported that nothing is finalized between Fangio and the Dolphins, however:

Fangio, 64, brings quite the résumé to Miami. He spent three years as the Denver Broncos head coach between 2019-21, going 19-30 at the helm. But he's also had stints as the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers (1995-98), Indianapolis Colts (1999-01), Houston Texans (2002-05), San Francisco 49ers (2011-14) and the Chicago Bears (2015-18).

His defenses have finished top-10 in yards allowed nine times and top-10 in points allowed 10 times. That made his potential hiring a widely acclaimed move for the Dolphins:

The Dolphins fired former defensive coordinator Josh Boyer earlier in January after his units regressed from sixth in points allowed in 2020 to 16th in 2021 and 22nd this past year. His defenses also never finished better than 15th in yards allowed in his three seasons at the helm.

In Fangio, young head coach and offensive mastermind Mike McDaniel will get an experienced and widely respected defensive coordinator to handle that side of the ball. Ostensibly, the move will allow McDaniel to be hands-off on the defense and focus more on the offensive side of the ball.

That unit wasn't an issue for the Dolphins in 2022, as the first-year head coach led them to a No. 6 finish in yards and No. 11 finish in points. And that was with starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa missing four games because of multiple concussions.

The Dolphins, in turn, went 9-8 and ended a five-year playoff drought. The reported Fangio hiring will only add to the excitement building around the organization.
