Britain Covey will get a taste of the Super Bowl in his first NFL season.

The former Utah and Timpview High standout is headed to Super Bowl LVII with Philadelphia after the Eagles beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-7 in the NFC championship on Sunday.

He’s far from the only Utah tie competing for an NFL championship in two weeks, though.

The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 later Sunday in the AFC championship, ensuring that there will be several BYU and Utah ties in Arizona for Super Bowl LVII at State Farm Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 12. 

Eagles Utah ties headed to Super Bowl LVII

  • Former Utah and Timpview High wide receiver/return specialist Britain Covey, who went undrafted last April, has been Philadelphia’s punt returner this season after starting the year on the practice squad.
  • Former Weber State and Stansbury High offensive guard Sua Opeta has been with the Eagles’ organization since 2019 and is currently on the team’s practice squad.
  • Former Hunter High tight end Noah Togiai has been with the Eagles since the middle of the 2021 season and is currently on the team’s practice squad.
  • Eagles quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson, who played quarterback at Utah, has been with Philadelphia the past two seasons.

Chiefs Utah ties headed to Super Bowl LVII

  • Former BYU and Stansbury High safety Zayne Anderson has been with Kansas City for the past two seasons and is a practice squad member, his primary role thus far with the team.
  • Former BYU tight end Matt Bushman has had a quiet season, though he re-signed to the Chiefs’ practice squad in late December; an injury in the preseason kept him sidelined much of the year.
  • Former Layton High wide receiver Marcus Kemp is in his third stint with the Chiefs, mainly as a special teams and practice squad guy; he won a Super Bowl ring with the team in Super Bowl LIV.
  • Chiefs coach Andy Reid, a former BYU player and grad assistant, is in his 10th season as Kansas City’s coach; he led the Chiefs to a championship in Super Bowl LVII and this will be Kansas City’s third Super Bowl appearance in the past four years, this time against his former team (he coached the Eagles from 1999-2012).
  • Chiefs offensive quality control coach Porter Ellett, a BYU graduate, is in his sixth season with the Chiefs and third in his current role.
  • Chiefs defensive quality control coach Alex Whittingham, a former Utah linebacker and the son of Utah coach Kyle Whittingham, is in his fifth season as a Chiefs assistant and fourth in his current role.

A look at how Utah ties on active rosters performed in Sunday’s AFC and NFC championship games:

Philadelphia

  • Britain Covey, WR/RS, Utah and Timpview High: Covey made three fair catches with no returns in the win.

San Francisco

  • Fred Warner, LB, BYU: Warner had eight tackles, including four solo stops, and a tackle for loess.
  • Mitch Wishnowsky, P, Utah: Wishnowsky punted four times, with a 42-yard average and three inside the 20.

Chiefs 23, Bengals 20

Kansas City

  • Marcus Kemp, WR, Layton High: Kemp, who was called up from the practice squad, made his first career postseason catch, a 13-yarder, after injuries to other Kansas City wide receivers.

Cincinnati

  • Jalen Davis, CB, Utah State: Not active for game.
  • Jay Tufele, DT, Bingham High: Not active for game.
