A male suspect wearing a ski mask approached Temple Ner Tamid’s front door early Sunday morning and threw a Molotov cocktail at the building, according to Bloomfield police.
It left no damage after the suspect fled the scene, according to officials.
The temple’s Rabbi Marc Katz told News 12 New Jersey that they have been preparing for an incident like this to happen for many years and the building is prepared and secure.
“We live in a society where religious institutions are under attack and Jewish institutions all the more so, and so we’ve stepped up our security knowing that’s the case and today everything worked the way it should,” Katz said.
Religion classes were canceled on Sunday. However, they are expected to be back in session on Monday.
This past November, all New Jersey Synagogues were on high alert after a tweet from the FBI warned of credible threats made to the houses of worship.
The Anti-Defamation League reported a 34% increase in antisemitic incidents throughout the country from 2020 to 2021.
Police are asking the public to come forward if they have any information.
