The Cy Young award plaques that Justin Verlander and Sandy Alcantara received on Saturday contained major spelling errors.

The 2022 MLB season concluded after the Houston Astros defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in six games. Since then, the league had an absurd Hot Stove season, and year-end awards were handed out. When it comes to the best pitchers in the American League and National League for the 2022 season, those honors went to Justin Verlander and Sandy Alcantara, respectively. Both pitchers won them unanimously, receiving all 30 first-place votes.

On Saturday, the players received their awards at the BBWAA Awards dinner. Both the former Houston Astros ace and Miami Marlins superstar received their official Cy Young plaques. The thing is, there was a pretty big spelling error on them.

“Most Valuble Pitcher.”

This year, there was a change to the Cy Young awards. In the past, the plaque used to contain the phrase, “Most Outstanding Pitcher.” Instead, the made the change to “Most Valuable Pitcher.” However, valuable was spelt wrong.

Verlander won the Cy Young award for the third time of his career and his second as a pitcher for the Astros. In his first season back since undergoing Tommy John surgery, Verlander led the AL with 18 wins, a 1.75 ERA, a 0.829 WHIP, a 6.0 hits-per-nine-innings ratio, and a .818 winning percentage.

As for Alcantara, this is the first time that he has won the Cy Young. The Miami ace led the NL with a 8.0 WAR (wins above replacement), 228.2 innings pitched, six complete games, and one shutout. Alcantara also recorded a 2.28 ERA and 0.980 WHIP.

Next season, both Verlander and Alcantara will be in the same division. Verlander joined the New York Mets on a two-year, $86.67 million contract, while Alcantara remains with the Marlins.

On Saturday, both were recognized as the most valuable pitchers in their respective leagues in the 2022 season.
