The Bridgeport community gathered at Summerfield United Methodist Church Sunday to reflect on the death of Tyre Nichols.
The group said they united to show solidarity with Nichols' family and the Memphis community.
“This has been evil that we cannot tolerate, not in this state, not in this country, not anywhere. Our citizens are appalled everywhere. So, this was the smallest thing that we could do just to help show light and to support the family,” said Wayne Winston, event organizer.
Nichols, a 29-year-old father, was on his way home from taking pictures of the sky on Jan. 7, when police pulled him over. He was just a few minutes from the home he shared with his mother and stepfather, when he was brutally attacked by five Memphis police officers.
AP Wire Services were used in this report.
