100 years around the sun sure is a long time - but it's nothing for Vince Newman.
"I'm being facetious when I say, ‘keep breathing,’ but seriously - it has a great bearing on longevity," Newman told us Saturday while celebrating his 100th birthday.
"My advice is, have a work ethic," Newman said when asked for wisdom for the youth. "If you are earning your way - if you inherited and all you had to do was spend that money - you don't feel you've accomplished anything. But if you've been out earning your living, and you want to buy a Corvette - you earned your money. Buy a Corvette."
An appetite for hard work isn't new advice for Newman, who was once a WWII pilot and later instructor.
Even now, Newman volunteers and helps out at the Air and Space Museum when he can.
He even renewed his driver's license, but he tells us that for safety reasons, his family asks him not to drive.
However, "they're on the hook," as Newman says. His family has to drive him wherever he wants to go.
Newman used to work on cars in his spare time, but now says that it's no longer something he wants to do.
He tells us that things he used to think were a waste of time, like reading books or reading the paper, he values more as he got older.
"Life changes, you change, your body changes. You do what's capable. If I want to read the paper in the morning, that's what I do," he said. "I wanna read a book, that's what I do. It doesn't bother me. I used to feel I was wasting time if I was reading instead of fixing something."
At 100 years old, even Newman can spare some time to enjoy himself.
And stick around till next year - he's looking forward to his 101st.
