The Vienna Police Department is cautioning residents to be vigilant after a two-vehicle crash led to a carjacking in Fairfax County late Saturday evening, according to police.
Around 10 p.m., a driver was rear-ended by a black Dodge Challenger on Park Street near Moore Avenue in Vienna.
When the driver got out to see the damage from the crash, the suspects who were in the Challenger pulled out a gun, took the driver's car and fled the scene, according to the Vienna Police Department.
The driver of the Challenger also fled.
Neighbors like Pat McCloskey said they are stunned a violent crime like this happened in their quiet and safe community, just feet from their doorstep.
"Because there was a gun involved, it's a little shocking. Vienna's got a pretty good police force, pretty present," McCloskey said.
The driver's cell phone was still inside the stolen vehicle, preventing them from calling 911 and leaving the driver to walk to a nearby police station.
The stolen car was eventually found abandoned in Baltimore, police said.
There were no injuries and no guns were discharged, according to the report.
Authorities are warning drivers to be on the lookout for similar situations.
McCloskey said he is going to be more alert than he would have been if he ever finds himself in a car accident.
"You're always worried when you hear news. I can't deny that happened. My first thought was, 'Okay, I'll call the police first thing if I'm bumped from behind. It changes the protocol for a little fender bender," McCloskey said. "I told my kids, 'If somebody bumps you from behind, you have to call 911 and get a policeman on the scene."
