Erica Sullivan on Nation-Leading 500: “This is the first step”

NC STATE VS. TEXAS – DAY 2

Erica Sullivan established herself as the top 500-freestyler in the NCAA this season on Friday night, swimming to a 4:35.88. Sullivan says that she’s been working a lot on her confidence in training and this is the first step that she sees in that paying off. She also speaks to the Texas women establishing a proper distance group and when they get together, they do YARDS.

Whenever I see someone say “garbage yardage” I feel like it’s a shot at someone

Garbage yards are when the swimmer is not fully onboard with the the coaches plan. And that can happen whether it’s a good plan or a bad plan.

Agreed, but beyond this, I believe there are sets/workouts that are objectively garage yardage for a certain swimmer (eg 8 to 10 X400s for 50/100 sprinters, which was a real recurring set at a couple Big 10 schools in the ’00s where coaches were lauded)

Which is surprising considering her previous coach coached her to the Olympics and times she hasn’t touched since.

Kinda feels like maybe she’s clarifying so her words are twisted, giving context and more detail where needed.

The video is going to be seen by recruits and club coaches alike, helps the program?

She be referring to the training being more specific that works for unlike last year. Now that the coaches know her better. They have adapted to her needs. Also seems the Coaches have adapted really well with all the top blue chips.
