In addition to a flood watch, a wind advisory remains up for Kauai, where gusts to 50 mph are expected.
The severe weather comes after a weekend of flooding rains and blustery winds.
Here’s the latest:
- Kuhio Highway, near the Hanalei Bridge, is closed due to flooding, according to Kauai Police Department. A stream gage near the Hanalei Bridge indicated that water levels remain very high — may take a couple of hours before the roadway is reopened.
- On Kauai, crews have reopened one lane of Kuhio Highway in Hanalei following heavy flooding. The situation forced the DOE to cancel classes at Hanalei Elementary School on Monday.
- Also on Monday, five public schools were also closed because of flooding. The schools will reopen Tuesday.
- And back on Kauai, a water conservation notice has been issued amid ongoing power outages. Residents are asked to use water for essential needs only until severe weather conditions have passed.
National Weather Service forecasters said heavy rains are expected through the evening, though the threat of flooding should slowly diminish as a surface trough near Maui County slowly moves northwest.
