PHILADELPHIA – The NFC Championship Game is finally here, and the Eagles will be looking to advance to their first Super Bowl since the 2017-2018 season, a run that ended with the team getting their first Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Cornerback Avonte Maddox and linebacker T.J. Edwards were not part of that run, with the two still in college. The two players have been dealing with injuries, but they will be able to play in Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Maddox will play in his first game since injuring his toe in the Eagles’ loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Christmas Eve. Maddox — who has an interception, three passes defended, 43 tackles, and three forced fumbles in nine games — will be vital in stopping the 49ers’ passing attack that includes star wide receiver Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle.
To make room for Maddox, the Eagles deactivated cornerback Josiah Scott, who has filled in as a slot corner when Maddox has missed time. With Maddox returning and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson able to play the nickel corner position in a pinch, Scott was the odd man out.
Edwards, who was a late addition to the injury report with an ankle injury, will also be essential in setting up the Eagles defense on the field, checking to the right coverages to attempt to confuse 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. Edwards will also be important in the passing game, potentially finding himself matched up against 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey.

Running back Trey Sermon will not get a chance to play against his old team after he was listed on the inactive list. Sermon played in nine games for the 49ers last season, rushing for 167 yards and a touchdown. After deciding to go in another direction, the 49ers waived Sermon before the season began, with the Eagles claiming him. Sermon has only seen two games of action this season, getting two carries for 19 yards, both of which resulted in first downs.
