Ilhan Omar reveals some GOPs have privately said they will not vote to remove her from committee

.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-CA) revealed on Sunday that a few House Republicans have told her in private that they will not vote for her removal from the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Omar’s statement comes after three other House representatives have publicly stated that they will not vote to remove her from her position on the committee. The GOP members who will not be voting for her removal are doing so “because they don’t want to be seen as hypocrites,” Omar said during an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union.

“They have taken a position, in the last Congress, and they will continue to do that,” Omar said. “And I believe that that is a really important piece here, because their stance, to stand behind two members that were accused of inciting violence and threatening the lives of members of Congress, was to say the majority should not have the job of removing the minority from their committees and I hope that they keep their word.”

In the last Congress, Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA) and Paul Gosar (AZ) were removed from their committee assignments. Greene’s removal was in response to her posting videos with anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim sentiments, as well as various conspiracy videos, prior to her time in Congress, according to CBS News. Gosar’s removal came after he posted a photoshopped anime video to social media showing him appearing to kill Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and attacking President Joe Biden, according to CNN.

As of Sunday, three House Republicans, Ken Buck (R-CO), Nancy Mace (R-SC) and Victoria Spartz (R-IN) have publicly stated they will not vote for Omar’s removal from the Foreign Affairs Committee. Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) will be unable to vote due to him recovering from an accident. The vote has a 5-vote margin, meaning only one more representative needs to vote no to remove Omar for her to remain on the committee, according to Axios.

Omar’s potential removal from the Foreign Affairs Committee comes only a few days after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy removed Democratic Reps. Adam Schiff (CA) and Eric Swalwell (CA) from the House Intelligence Committee. McCarthy cited allegations that Swalwell had a relationship with a Chinese spy and alleged that Schiff intentionally misled the American public while leading the investigations into former President Donald Trump’s alleged ties to Russia.

The two California Democrats and Omar have been very critical of McCarthy’s actions, claiming that it was an act of “political vengeance” to Democrats and several GOP lawmakers voting to remove Greene and Gosar from their committees.
