49ers vs. Eagles final score, results: Philadelphia outlasts banged-up San Francisco to advance to Super Bowl 57

The Eagles capitalized on a sloppy display by the 49ers to punch their ticket to Super Bowl 57, defeating San Francisco 31-7 on Sunday in Philadelphia.

It was a wretched day for the Niners, who saw quarterback Brock Purdy leave the game on their opening drive with an elbow injury. Purdy was replaced by Josh Johnson, who had flashes but couldn't quite replicate Purdy's production. Johnson was knocked out of the game with a concussion, forcing a compromised Purdy to return.

Philadelphia was propelled by its run game and stifling defense. Miles Sanders, Boston Scott and Jalen Hurts all found the end zone on the ground, while Kenneth Gainwell proved effective as a runner and receiver.

A muffed snap that led to an Eagles touchdown before the end of the second quarter put San Francisco on the back foot. And after Johnson took a shot to the helmet at the beginning of the third quarter, things became even more difficult.

Purdy looked a shell of himself when he returned, completing just one pass in the second half. Coach Kyle Shanahan stayed with the rookie for as long as possible, but the Eagles' defense wasn't fooled. Loading up the box on nearly snap, Philly put the clamps on the 49ers' run game. If not for a sparkling performance from Christian McCaffrey, who somehow netted over 100 yards from scrimmage, the score could've looked that much worse.

49ers vs. Eagles live updates, highlights from 2023 NFC championship

(All times Eastern)

End of fourth quarter: Eagles 31, 49ers 7

6:00 p.m.: TURNOVER ON DOWNS! Samuel unable to reach the marker on the end-around. This game is over, for all intents and purposes.

5:56 p.m.: BRAWL! A scuffle breaks out after Trent Williams slams K'Von Wallace into the turf. It's getting ugly here at the Linc.

5:52 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Jake Elliott sinks the field goal to add a little more distance to Philly's lead.

Eagles 31, 49ers 7

5:48 p.m.: Greenlaw takes one of the more bizarre penalties you'll see this year. Check it out:

5:44 p.m.: Gainwell putting serious miles in thus far. Great showing for RB2.

5:40 p.m.: TURNOVER ON DOWNS! Shanahan's persistence with running the ball is not going well. Samuel stuffed at the line of scrimmage as San Francisco spurns yet another chance to get back in the game. This game is slipping fast for the 49ers.

5:36 p.m.: The 49ers have been completely reliant on the run since Johnson went down. It looks like Purdy has nothing left in the tank at this moment.

End of third quarter: Eagles 28, 49ers 7

5:26 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Hurts takes it in from a yard out. This game is getting out of hand.

Eagles 28, 49ers 7

5:24 p.m.: Nick Sirianni is activating Hurts as a runner. Trio of run plays — coupled with a Hufanga unnecessary roughness — puts the Eagles right at the cusp of the end zone.

5:21 p.m.: Penalties are killing San Francisco today. This time, the Niners are flagged for a roughing the kicker, which will lead to a new set of downs for Philly.

5:20 p.m.: Charvarius Ward with a wonderful deflection on the lofted pass, preventing the gaudy completion. Punt team headed on the field.

5:17 p.m.: Gainwell making serious plays in the flat, darting past Greenlaw to get the first. He's doing quite decently in limited touches today.

5:09 p.m.: Shanahan putting his faith in Purdy on the second drive of the half. However, it doesn't look like he's got much strength in his elbow after suffering his ailment earlier in the game.

Another three and out sends the ball back to Philly. Things are getting quite dire for San Francisco.

5:05 p.m.: An unusual sight at the Linc: Brown dropping a wide open pass. You don't see that too often.

49ers defense holds to give SF a chance.

4:59 p.m.: Ndamukong Suh puts the pressure on Johnson, who slings a dangerous pass that just evades Darius Slay's fingertips. Looks like Johnson slammed his head into the turf. He's coming out of the game and Purdy is coming back in. Looks like McCaffrey would be the emergency option at QB if they were unable to return.

When it rains, it pours...

4:57 p.m.: George Kittle discards his defender to get the first down on third and long. Need to see more of him this half.

4:56 p.m.: San Francisco will open the third quarter with the ball. Looks like it's Johnson leading the 49ers out. Can't imagine Purdy will be returning at this point.

End of second quarter: Eagles 21, 49ers 7

4:40 p.m.: A screen pass to Samuel ends the first half. A long road back for San Francisco if it wants to make it to the Super Bowl.

4:39 p.m.: Big return by Ray-Ray McCloud gives San Francisco a chance to cut into Philly's lead before the end of the half.

4:36 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Philly punches it in once more, this time courtesy of a Boston Scott run. A Dre Greenlaw facemark looms large as Philly pushes its lead to 14.

Eagles 21, 49ers 7

4:33 p.m.: FUMBLE! Johnson muffs the snap and Reddick scoops it up! Huge huge play for the Eagles, who will get a chance to add to their lead before the end of the frame.

4:32 p.m.: Johnson fizzes a pass to Samuel for the first down. Looks like Kyle Shanahan is being aggressive on this final drive.

4:27 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Sanders waltzes in with ease as Philadelphia retakes the lead!

Eagles 14, 49ers 7

4:26 p.m.: Another penalty in the secondary brings the ball to the 18 yard line. These penalties are back-breaking for the 49ers.

4:22 p.m.: Gainwell, fresh off his first career 100 yard game last week, is making plays. He gets the first on third down, then follows is up with a darting run into San Francisco's secondary on the following plays. Philadelphia is back in the red zone as the whistle is blown for two minute warning.

4:21 p.m.: Kenneth Gainwell gets involved with a nice catch and scamper, making things manageable for Philly on third down.

4:19 p.m.: A heap of flags being tossed today. Pretty sloppy game, all things considered.

4:17 p.m.: Ward nearly makes the interception on third down. However, he's adjudged to have fouled Brown, drawing a pass interference flag — and a new set of downs.

4:08 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Unbelievable run by McCaffrey, who hurdles past one, dekes past another and runs through two more en route to a 23-yard score. Incredible play by the superstar.

Eagles 7, 49ers 7

4:05 p.m.: Johnson-McCaffrey connection comes up trump for San Francisco once more, with the third-stringer finding the dual-threat tailback on the slant. If he caught it more cleanly, he could've gotten some real yardage. However, he was tripped up right as he reached the marker.

Still, decent drive for the 49ers so far.

4:04 p.m.: Screen play to McCaffrey proves effective, taking the 49ers right to the cusp of the first down marker. With Purdy still out the game, it looks like we'll be seeing a steady diet of McCaffrey.

4:00 p.m.: Another pass goes astray for Hurts as Philadelphia is forced to punt.

3:59 p.m.: Hurts avoids the the safety just barely, leaning over his opposition end zone before going downs after getting cracked by Bosa. Niners defense is locked in.

3:54 p.m.: Johnson looking shaky in his first few drives. Multiple penalties up front as the Niners are forced to boot the ball back to the Eagles yet again. Have to wonder if Purdy is close to returning at this point.

End of first quarter: Eagles 7, 49ers 0

3:48 p.m.: After a lengthy review involving a wire, Johnson takes the field and slips a pass to Samuel, who takes it nine yards before being forced to the turf. Good way to end the quarter for the San Francisco backup.

3:43 p.m.: Hurts just misses Brown, who was streaking down the field. Lots of green grass in front of him. Unfortunate for Philly, who will punt the ball back to San Fran.

3:40 p.m.: Hurts zips the ball to Brown on the screen, who darts past the marker to move the chains on first.

3:38 p.m.: Another three and out for the Niners, who are in a bit of a precarious position with Purdy on the sideline. Looks like Nick Bosa is also being tended to on the bench. Things go from bad to worse for San Francisco.

3:35 p.m.: Reddick with another sack, this time on Josh Johnson, who replaced Purdy after the rookie RB suffered a wrist injury on the first Reddick sack. Looked like he ripped the ball out of Jackson's grasp on the dismount. Referees ruled otherwise, though.

3:30 p.m.: 49ers force the three and out to get the ball back.

3:25 p.m.: FUMBLE! Haason Reddick knocks the ball out of Purdy's hands, sending it rolling into the turf. Picked up by an Eagles defender, who scoops it up. Initially ruled as an incompletion but it was overturned, giving the ball back to Philly.

3:24 p.m.: First touch of the game for Deebo Samuel, who gains four on the run through the tackle.

3:23 p.m.: McCaffrey lunges over the marker for a first down on third-and-one. Niners will need him today.

3:22 p.m.: Brock Purdy and the Niners on the field.

3:18 p.m.: Looks like the Eagles got away with one. The ball seemed to become dislodged as Smith went to the ground on his huge catch. Should've been ruled incomplete. Oh well.

3:16 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Miles Sanders creeps in easily from seven yards out. Philly opens the scoring!

Eagles 7, 49ers 0

3:15 p.m.: What a catch by DeVonta Smith! The third-year wideout reaches up, adjusts his body and grabs it over the shoulder with his right hand! It'll be first and goal at the seven yard line!

3:14 p.m.: Hurts finds Dallas Goedert on third down, who is stuffed well short of the first down marker. Looks like the Eagles are staying on the field for fourth.

3:12 p.m.: Hurts rolls out, evading the pressure from Dre Greenlaw before hitting A.J. Brown, who stoops low to grab the ball and move the chains on third down.

3:11 p.m.: Warner headed to the blue medical tent. Something to watch for going forward.

3:07 p.m.: Miles Sanders takes it down the gut for a first down. Looks like Fred Warner is down for the Niners. That could be a massive blow for San Francisco.

3:06 p.m.: Decent return by Boston Scott puts the Eagles at the 35 yard line to start.

3:05 p.m.: 49ers kicking the ball off. The NFC Championship is underway!

2:45 p.m.: The beef was out on display ahead of Sunday's game. Check out this spat between A.J. Brown and Jimmie Ward:

2:30 p.m.: Lots of OGs at Lincoln Financial Field, including former Eagles stars DeSean Jackson and LeGarrette Blount.

2:20 p.m.: The stars are out and about in Philly. Big time company here.

1:50 p.m.: San Fran fans made the lengthy journey to Philly for the big game. Gotta imagine this weather is taking a toll on them, however.

1:45 p.m.: Injury reports out for the two sides. Looks like the biggest absence will be San Francisco running back Elijah Mitchell, who poured in 96 yards and a touchdown vs. Dallas last week. Christian McCaffrey is active as expected.

1:40 p.m.: Nick Bosa warming up a little more than an hour before the game. That's a scary sight.

1:20 p.m.: Jerry Rice is in the building. The GOAT has made the trek to Philly to watch his beloved Niners in the NFC Championship. He's also got a big ole' chain on. Deebo Samuel's impact is crazy.
