Frigid air and strong wind have created bitter cold conditions for the Pacific Northwest this weekend, with overnight temperatures falling below freezing level into the coming week.
“The wind chill factor will make it feel below freezing much of the day in our area,” said KATU Meteorologist Rhonda Shelby.
Severe weather shelters opened overnight Saturday to offer people relief from the bitter cold.
The National Weather Service issued a wind chill advisory through 11 a.m. Monday for the Cascade Range, where wind chills will be below zero.
Overnight Saturday, Mt. Hood saw hurricane force wind gusts, and wind chills of -33 degrees Fahrenheit.
“This will result in frost bite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken. If you must venture outdoors, make sure you wear a hat and gloves,” NWS officials said.
