People in Chappaqua are kicking off Black History Month early with a march in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The event was organized by the Town of New Castle Committee on Race, Equity and Inclusion. The group says the event aimed to highlight town unity with a peaceful march followed by a panel discussion at Chappaqua library.
The group partnered with students from the Horace Greeley BIPIC Student Union, a group pushing to increase diversity in the Chappaqua Central School District.
"When you look at people who are taking care of you, educating you, and they don't look like you, they don't share any of your experiences, you don't feel comfortable,” said union copresident, Mariam Cisse.
Co-chairs of the Town of New Castle Council of Race, Equity, and Inclusion said they want to come up with inclusive solutions for the community.
"I hope they take away that it's important to connect with our neighbors to physically come together and gather and discuss difficult topics and also to celebrate one another and know our neighbors,” said co-chair Supurna Banerjee.
More than 100 people attended the march in the name of peace.
