Rocky Romero: AJ Styles Thought It Would Have Been Cool If He Showed Up At Wrestle Kingdom 17

The potential was there for the former two-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion AJ Styles to return to the Tokyo Dome for the first time since 2016.

Prior to winning the NWA World Historic Welterweight Title at the CMLL Super Viernes event in Mexico City, Mexico on Friday. He joined Fightful’s Wrestling Perspective Podcast and talked about various topics.

When Romero was asked about the recent rumors of WWE Superstar AJ Styles potentially appearing at NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom 17 before a recent ankle injury. Romero would confirm to Fightful that there were talks about a possible appearance.

“As for AJ, I mean there were some talks about AJ possibly coming, but only because AJ himself thought it would be cool if he showed up. I think if it was up to AJ and if he didn't get hurt, maybe he would have shown up, but there was nothing official I would say.” Romero said.

It was widely speculated that Styles would have accompanied his O.C. stablemate and WWE Superstar Karl Anderson to the ring. Anderson was booked to defend the NJPW NEVER Openweight Championship title against Tama Tonga. Anderson would end up losing the match and title to Tonga by pinfall.

Styles is expected to be out of action six to eight weeks after breaking his left ankle at a December 29th WWE Live Event in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Styles could potentially be out longer, depending on rehabilitation plans.

Rocky Romero recently talked to Fightful about the AEW and NJPW crossover PPV event Forbidden Door, and joked about the potential crossover event featuring the WWE, AEW, and NJPW. Click here to view that article.
