The New Mexico community gathered in solidarity at the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice on Saturday to mourn the death of Tyre Nichols, 29, whose life was tragically cut short at the hands of five Memphis police officers in January. Many demanded actions for change to put an end to injustice, police brutality and to hold state lawmakers accountable in hopes of change. "Yet again, another black body, another black man who has been snuffed from our lives for no reason. Blatant murder. Live in front of cameras on their video camera in front of other members, where he's 80 yards away from his mother. We have to continue to call out the murders that are happening by the police," said Barbara Jordan with PRESS New Mexico. "With our brother being murdered and with the police being swiftly arrested, yes, we appreciate that. Even though they are black police officers, they are still indoctrinated into white supremacy ideology, and that is the core of the problem. We must elect members who will support us, who will give us the vision of the America that we want and dream of, where human life is paramount over all, over finance, over the budget, over the status quo."“Our democracy breaks down when we stop treating every human with respect, especially those in marginalized communities. Whoever you are for whatever your walk of life, respect all of those around you," said Rayellen Smith, president of Indivisible of Albuquerque. "We can't allow this to stand in our city, our county, our country, our nation or anywhere in the world. We must condemn police violence against civilians at every turn.""If someone is getting brutalized in the streets, it's up to us to do something about it. Why do we have to wait for the police to come and save us? We have to save each other. I'm tired of waiting for somebody else to come save us. I see everybody out here. I'm going to be looking for you all throughout the streets of Albuquerque if I see someone doing something to you," said local activist Arthur Bell.Following the footage of Tyre Nichols's fatal beating, the Memphis Police Department announced it is permanently deactivating the unit the five officers were in.
