WNBA Legend Candace Parker Announces Aces Contract Agreement After Chicago Sky Stint

Two-time WNBA MVP Candace Parker has agreed to a contract with the Las Vegas Aces following a two-year stint with the Chicago Sky, she announced Saturday via Instagram.

"After evaluating the landscape together with my family, we've decided the Las Vegas Aces are the right organization for us at this point in our lives," Parker wrote. "I'm forever appreciative of everyone in Chicago—our fans, teammates, coaches and ownership.

"But more than the past two seasons, I'm thankful to the city that raised me, the childhood friends I still have to this day, the teachers I still am learning from, and the moments in time that will forever be in my heart."

Parker added: "While Chicago will always be my home, my family's home is on the West Coast. To play for a championship close to home is the perfect situation for us. I'm looking forward to continuing the journey this summer in Las Vegas."

Parker had meetings with the Sky, Aces and Los Angeles Sparks, her former team, in free agency, according to Annie Costabile of the Chicago Sun Times.

The Aces are an intriguing destination for any elite free agent after they finished the 2022 season with a 26-10 record and went on to win their first WNBA title last season, defeating the Connecticut Sun in four games.

The Aces, perhaps the best team in the WNBA, offer Parker the opportunity to win another title before she calls it quits in the not-too-distant future. With a roster that includes Kelsey Plum, A'ja Wilson and Chelsea Gray, whom she won a title with in L.A. in 2016, Las Vegas will be among the title favorites again in 2023 with the addition of Parker.

Parker spent the first 13 years of her career with the Los Angeles Sparks, which selected her first overall in the 2008 WNBA draft. She earned four All-Star selections, two MVP awards and a WNBA title during her tenure with the franchise.

The 36-year-old had some of the best years of her career in Los Angeles, averaging 16.9 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.6 blocks across 13 seasons while shooting 48.2 percent from the floor and 33.7 percent from deep.

In her two seasons with the Sky, Parker was named an All-Star twice. She also led Chicago to the WNBA title in 2021.

During the 2022 season, she averaged 13.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.0 blocks in 32 games while shooting 45.8 percent from the floor and 31.1 percent from deep.

While she's past her prime, Parker is still an elite player and can help Las Vegas repeat as WNBA champions in 2023. It appears Wilson and Gray believe so, as they had a great response to the news of the signing:

If the Aces win another title in 2023, they'll become the first team to win back-to-back championships for the first time since the Sparks in 2001 and 2002.
