CLEVELAND, Ohio – Solon High School captured first place on the “Nordson Academic Challenge” program that aired Saturday (Jan. 28) on WEWS-TV (Channel 5).

Solon finished with 640 points in the competition, which pits three area high schools against one another.

Wooster placed second with 460 points, and Uniontown Lake took third with 450 points.

Student teams score points for their knowledge in math, science, history and other topics.

At the end of the season, the teams with the three highest point totals return to play for the championship and a $6,000 grant from the Nordson Corp., the show’s sponsor.

The championship match is scheduled for May 27.

Solon’s 640 points is the highest total so far this season, surpassing the 635 points achieved by Lake Ridge Academy on Jan. 21.

Solon’s team is composed of seniors Prahalad Rao, Rohan Dushyanth Navaneetha Raj and Ethan Feldman. Prahalad is the team’s captain, and he and Rohan are co-presidents.

Peter Bergman, an English teacher at Solon High School, is the team’s adviser and coach.

Solon got off to a fast start, winning the opening Lightning Round and maintaining its lead throughout the competition.

The team had answered just one question incorrectly until the final Grab Bag round, in which it had three correct answers and two wrong answers.

Rob Powers, 6 and 11 p.m. anchor for News 5, is the show’s host.

The Nordson Corp. is a global manufacturing company headquartered in Westlake.

The program, which is previously recorded, airs at 11:30 a.m. every Saturday on WEWS-TV (Channel 5).
