The daughter of Eric Garner, a New York man who was killed during an encounter with police, railed against the release of the Tyre Nichols footage.
“The fact that we waited for this video to be released like it was a exclusive movie that needed to be premiered on a certain day, it really boils my blood. It’s just heart wrenching to listen to the coverage after,” Emerald Garner said on NewsNation Friday, hours after the videos were released by the city of Memphis. Nichols’s family viewed the footage before it was released to the public.

“It’s just a replay of what happened eight years ago, almost nine, to what happened with my father,” Garner said.
Garner went on to say that she has not personally viewed the footage. She has taken a stance to no longer view footage of violent encounters with police officers. When she first viewed the footage of her own father suffocating under a pile of police officers attempting to arrest him, it was five years after the fact.
“When I watched that video I was in the room with [then NYPD Officer Daniel] Pantelo, and for me, that was a statement in itself that that the disrespect that we receive from the police department,” Garner said.
Pantelo would not be fired from his duties as an officer until 2019 when the footage of him putting Garner in a choke hold was released. He went on to unsuccessfully sue the department.

“In this case of Tyre Nichols, justice was served swiftly,” Garner said. “If we would have had that in 2014, would there have been in Tyre Nichols today? I don’t think so.”
As the footage of Nichols gains traction online, there is also a movement against sharing the footage and only sharing his home videos and pictures from before the encounter.
