Classic-style Mercedes-Benz SUV stolen from garage: Moreland Hills Police Blotter

There were conflicting and shifting reports on whether the SUV was taken "with" or "without" keys -- with a "be-on-the-lookout (BOLO)" alert to surrounding departments later in the morning stating that keys were used.

MORELAND HILLS, Ohio

Stolen vehicle, attempt to locate: Giles Road

Police sent out a “be-on-the-lookout (BOLO)” alert to surrounding departments on Jan. 21 after residents reported around 9:30 a.m. that a black 2005 Mercedes-Benz G500 SUV had been taken from their garage.

There were conflicting reports on whether or not the keys were inside, with initial reports indicating it had been taken without keys. That was changed when the “BOLO” was issued later in the morning.

Police were also looking at footage from a neighbor’s security camera for any additional leads.

Theft: Chagrin Boulevard

After receiving a report around 7:30 p.m. Jan. 17 involving stolen AirPods from Moreland Hills Elementary School, police followed up first at a residence on Harvard Road (near where it changes from Hiram Trail).

The investigation then proceeded to a Bryce Road residence in Pepper Pike. Police reported about 9:30 p.m. that the “earbuds” had been returned to their rightful owner, with no further details available.

Suspicion: Chagrin Boulevard

A caller reported at 3:49 p.m. Jan. 21 that her black 2020 Dodge Durango listed as stolen with the Willoughby Hills Police Department had shown up on GPS tracking as being stationary about an hour earlier between Hiram Trail and Chagrin Boulevard -- possibly around Moreland Hills Elementary School.

The SUV now appeared to be on the move again, she added. Moreland Hills police checked the Orange school district and Hiram House lots, but were unable to locate the stolen Durango at that time.

Traffic complaint: Chagrin Boulevard

A caller wanted to speak to an officer around 12:45 p.m. Jan. 21 concerning a road rage incident that allegedly occurred about 10 minutes earlier, with no further details other than a blue Toyota sedan may have been involved.

Soliciting: Basswood Lane

A caller reported at 6:22 p.m. Jan. 19 that a pair of men were going door-to-door asking about roofing jobs, referencing neighbors who had moved out about two years ago. Shortly before 7 p.m., police located some roofers who explained they went to the wrong address and would be doing a house on the street.

Complaint-solicitors: Fox Glen Road

Responding to a complaint about a religious group in a small Mercedes-Benz SUV whose occupants were going door-to-door around 11:15 a.m. Jan. 20, police said the Jehovah’s Witnesses “checked OK” but were given a verbal warning about no left turns allowed in the cul-de-sac.

Car crash, squad call, mutual aid: Cleveland Street

Moreland Hills patrol officers assisted Chagrin Falls police and rescue with traffic control around 11:30 p.m. Jan. 20 after a two-car collision on or near the bridge, where one car had been turning out of The Laurels, formerly Hamlet at Chagrin Falls.

One occupant had back pain. An active warrant from the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office also came up for an occupant, a woman, 23, although she was only advised that the jail was full at that time.

Two tow trucks were needed and Cleveland Street was blocked off at East Orange and North streets, then reopened at 12:42 a.m. Jan. 21. The accident remained under investigation.

Departmental information: Hiram Trail

Patrol officers were advised just before 8 a.m. Jan. 18 that two residents were going out to look for a deer they had shot the previous night with a bow-and-arrow. They did not look for it at the time due to darkness, and wanted police to know what they were doing in case someone called.
