Gangs of London and The Capture's Paapa Essiedu has landed himself a new role in an upcoming Christmas movie from Richard Curtis, someone who knows a thing or two about creating a festive classic.

Deadline reports that the actor, who also starred in Murder on the Orient Express, I May Destroy You and Anne Boleyn, will appear opposite Bridesmaids and Ghostbusters' Melissa McCarthy.

The film currently doesn't have a title, but we know that it's set in New York City. Curtis, who wrote and directed Love Actually, is only writing this film, with Love Life's Sam Boyd directing.

The film is coming to NBC streaming service Peacock in the US. In the UK, the service is part of Sky and NOW's entertainment packages, so we wouldn't be too surprised to see it end up there.

In I May Destroy You, Essiedu played a character named Kwame, a Black queer man who was unashamed in his identity. Previously speaking to Digital Spy, the actor talked about how refreshing it was to have a character like that who isn't judged in-universe.

"I think that's one of the great things about Kwame," he told us. "There was no shame to him and to his identity, and especially to his sexuality. It's a big part of how he presents himself and identifies with himself. He's confident and he's happy and he's exploratory. He enjoys it. I think it's really important.

"You're used to seeing Black characters on television being oppressed and struggling, being in pain. It's great to be able to see some f**king joy! They're expressing themselves and their sexuality. I think that's quite a radical thing to do."

Joe Anderton

Joe Anderton is a freelance news writer and resident Welsh person at Digital Spy, having worked there since 2016.

In his time he's covered a host of live events, interviewed celebrities big and small and crowbarred a countless amount of great/awful (delete as appropriate) puns into articles.

A big fan of TV and movies both mainstream and obscure, Joe's main interest is in video gaming. Although particularly a PlayStation gamer, he plays across Xbox, Nintendo and PC/Steam Deck, and likes to keep tabs on many games he's not got the time to play.

Joe currently does not use Twitter, but he only ever used it to tell people to watch the film Help! I'm a Fish (which you really should do).
