Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has expressed interest in seeing Edgar Wright direct an episode of the show.

Last year, the Hot Fuzz director set speculation into overdrive after sharing a series of cryptic posts – though he later denied that he was involved.

During a new chat with GQ, however, Davies was asked whether there was any truth to the rumours, the writer replying: "Oh, no. Was there speculation?"

When he was brought up to date on the story, Davies then exclaimed: "Yes, please! No, we wouldn't have kept that secret, would we? If he's reading GQ, please get him to do it. I love him."

Helming an episode would no doubt be a big deal for Wright, who revealed to Digital Spy all the way back in 2010 that he is a lifelong fan of the show, and that he was previously approached to direct an episode in 2005.

"I was a huge Doctor Who nerd as a kid, to the point where I dressed up as Peter Davison's Doctor," he said at the time. "The last time I saw Steven [Moffat], he said 'Any time you want to do a Doctor Who, just shout'."

He added: "I got offered to direct one of them when Russell T Davies was doing it, during the Christopher Eccleston series, and I wasn't really available to do it."
