Paris Quota Learns About Behavioral Health

gina-matlock-at-rotary-2

Paris, Tenn.–Gina Matlock, Community Champion and Medical Student Coordinator for the Henry County Medical Center spoke on Behavioral Health to the Paris Quotarians and guests this week.

She won the Community Star Award in 2021 which is an award given out at the state level. She received this award because she led an initiative for which HCMC received a grant regarding mental health. She said that 25% of the US population suffers from mental health disorders, which can include post-partum depression, addictions, depression, suicide prevention, as well as conventional mental health issues.

Matlock said mental Health issues effect youth through older adults. Tennessee is in the bottom 10% of the states in terms of services for this population. The stigma attached to mental health issues is judgment, shame and fear from society as well as the individual experiencing the issues. This prevents many from seeking the help needed.

There is a Behavioral Health Center in the building behind/attached to HCMC. Walk-in services are available as well as telehealth. It is being so well used that they are thinking of adding additional personnel. There is a series of videos
available on the HCMC website by going to Services and then Behavioral Health Initiative. There is also a
digital version of resources available in Henry County at the City of Paris website.
