The top ten ranked teams each came out with a victory as Pella played host to Newton last night in a Little Hawkeye Conference basketball doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

The 9th-ranked Dutch girls won the opener 63-22 before the #8 Newton boys closed out the evening with a 58-40 decision.

Pella’s girls shot their way to a 15-0 lead, with Kennedy Van Vark making three three-pointers and Kylie Tauke adding a pair of long balls to start the game. All told, Blaine Forsythe’s crew hit nine from downtown on the night.

“We’re kind of waiting for that spurt where we’re hitting eight to nine threes in a game. We haven’t been shooting it super well from three, but we’ve been finishing at the rim. Today was a little bit of a reverse of that, so we’re waiting to put it all together and we’re continuing to take those steps. Our girls are buying into the process.”

Tauke scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Mia Warner had a near double-double with 10 points and nine boards. The Dutch improve to 12-3 overall and 7-2 in the LHC, and will head to Des Moines North for a non-conference contest Monday night.

In the boys game, Newton raced out to a 17-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, and led by nine at half. But the Dutch didn’t quit, pulling within 33-30 late in the third quarter. The Cardinals hit two big three-pointers to end the quarter and continued the barrage in the fourth, eventually building a 22-point lead. All told, they made 13 three-point baskets, while Pella struggled to 3-of-20 shooting from behind the arc.

Cam Schulte led Pella with 12 points and seven rebound and Romon Hugan scored 10. The Dutch fall to 8-7 and 3-6 in the league, and they’re next in action Tuesday night at home as part of a doubleheader against Oskaloosa.
