Gophers Top Bulldogs for 11th Straight Win

1/27/2023 7:20:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Abbey Murphy scored a pair of third period goals in the victory.

DULUTH, Minn. – The No. 3 Golden Gopher women's hockey team kept its win streak alive with a 3-1 win over No. 6 Minnesota Duluth on Friday afternoon at AMSOIL Arena.

In a defensive battle, it was Minnesota (21-3-2) who found the back of the net first after a scoreless first period. Fifth-year forward Catie Skaja redirected Madeline Wethington's shot from the point just over halfway through the contest to break the ice. Minnesota Duluth (19-7-1) answered just 37 seconds into the third period with a goal from defender Taylor Stewart to even the contest. It was Abbey Murphy who provided a pair of goals in the third period, which were both assisted by Grace Zumwinkle, to push the Gophers to the victory.

Sophomore goaltender Skylar Vetter stood tall for Minnesota, stopping 31 shots to improve her record this season to 18-3-2. Minnesota Duluth's Emma Soderberg made 35 saves in the loss.

Quotable
"A great win against a really good opponent on the road," said head coach Brad Frost. "I'm really proud of our team and the way they defended tonight. We competed and played a full 60 minutes of hockey, which you have to do against a good club. Skylar Vetter was really good in net again. All in all, a great team win."

Notable
•    Grace Zumwinkle moved into 10th place in program history in points with 196.
•    Zumwinkle also extended her point streak to a team-high 11 games.
•    10 of Catie Skaja's 41 career goals have come against Minnesota Duluth.
•    With the win, Minnesota has now defeated Minnesota Duluth in the regular season series in six consecutive years.
