Cathryn McGill is the director of the New Mexico Black Leadership Council. McGill said, "This is a sad day for everyone in America. None of it makes sense. My initial reaction was not again, and not in this way."
Sonia Gipson Rankin is a Law Professor at UNM. Rankin said, "He cried for his mother many times, and he cried for help. At least 10 officers watched this beating, and no one did anything."
A group in Albuquerque gave their demand for change in law enforcement and warned of our country's direction if things stay the same.
Laquonte Barry is with the Black New Mexico movement. Barry said, "It's a problem with race. It's a problem with the police department and their system."
McGill said, "We have to then talk about the culture of violence that exists in the system."
"It's no different from George Floyd and Breonna Taylor," said Rankin.
"This is a cautionary tale. Either we learn from it, or we're doomed to repeat it," said McGill.
KOAT also received a statement from Albuquerque's chapter of NAACP. It says, "Regardless of the race of the offenders, the punishment should be extreme according to established law. The unjustified killing of Mr. Nichols was extreme."
