Soloveychik Breaks 1000 Free Record on Day One of Big Ten Duals

1/27/2023 8:48:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving

MINNEAPOLIS – Gophers sophomore Bar Soloveychik broke the fifth school record of his young career Friday to highlight the opening night of competition for Minnesota in a Big Ten showdown with host-Northwestern, Purdue and Iowa.

Soloveychik took down the oldest record on the men's side when he swam the 1000 free in a time of 8:54.69, shaving over a second off the previous mark of 8:56.27 set by Justin Mortimer in 2001. It was also the fastest time in the event in the 36-year history of the Wildcats' Norris Aquatics Center.

A native of Kiryat Motzkin, Israel, Soloveychik now owns individual school records in the 200 free, 500 free, 1000 free and 400m free. He's also part of the 800 free relay record set last month at the Minnesota Invite.

His triumph in the 1000 free was one of two victories on the evening for Soloveychik. He was also part of the winning 800 free relay team along with fellow sophomore Chris Morris, junior Kaiser Neverman and freshman Alberto Hernandez. They finished at 6:25.80.

Minnesota picked up an additional relay victory in the men's 200 medley relay, which opened Friday night's proceedings. Neverman was a part of this one, as well, along with junior Casey Stowe, fifth-year senior Max McHugh and redshirt junior Lucas Farrar in a season-best time of 1:24.75.

McHugh and Farrar also logged individual victories. McHugh won the 100 breast in a time of 52.07, while Farrar touched first in the 50 free at 19.88, the only swimmer under 20 seconds.

In diving, freshman Drew Bennett claimed first place on the 1-meter with a personal best score of 316.75.

Minnesota's women were led by junior Megan Van Berkom and her first-place finish in the 200 IM. The Gophers went 1-2 in the event as Van Berkom won in 1:59.44 and senior Rachel Butler was next at 2:00.48.

Saturday's action begins at 11 a.m. with the 200 free relay, 400 IM, 100 free, 200 back, 100 fly, 500 free, 200 breast, 400 free relay, women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter.
