Residents of Newark housing complex say rodent infestation has destroyed their lives

Residents of the Georgia King Village housing complex in Newark are demanding better living conditions. They say that their homes are infested with mice and rats.

Residents of the Georgia King Village housing complex in Newark are demanding better living conditions. They say that their homes are infested with mice and rats.
Some residents tell News 12 New Jersey that they don’t even have clothes to wear because the rodents have destroyed them. They say they are afraid that they are going to get sick.
The 422-unit complex is an affordable housing community. Residents do pay rent. They say that they should be treated with dignity and feel as if they have been forgotten by the management company.
Residents say that they have seen some exterminators come by over the last few days, but they say that the infestation is uncontrollable.
“I expect that when we complain about something that they take care of it. Especially if its rats and stuff in the apartment,” says resident Alyah.
L + M Development Partners, which is the company that manages the complex, issued a statement about the situation.
That statement read in part, “The conditions recently identified by our residents are simply unacceptable, and we are ramping up ongoing efforts to address them, including an aggressive rodent eradication strategy and additional onsite staff.”
L + M also says that they have met with Newark City Hall leadership to discuss a general plan to address the issues onsite. They also say that they have hired a new superintendent to manage the property.
The Newark Housing Authority does not oversee the Georgia King complex.
