WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO SEE IS GRAPHIC. MORE CALMER. HEY, TYREE NICHOLS, HIS MOTHER HAD A CHANCE TO WATCH THIS VIDEO OF HER 29 YEAR OLD SON GETTING PULLED OVER BY MEMPHIS POLICE ON JANUARY 7TH. YOU DO ANYTHING. ROVEN WELLS SAYS SHE SIMPLY COULDN’T COULDN’T BEAR TO SEE THE VIDEO, WHICH THE FBI DIRECTOR SAYS IS APPALLING. WE SAY, WELL, WHICH THE MEMPHIS POLICE CHIEF CALLS A FAILING OF BASIC HUMANITY. ALSO, VIDEO SHE KNOWS IS HORRIFIC BECAUSE THREE DAYS AFTER HER SON WENT TO THE HOSPITAL WITH INJURIES FROM THE BEATING, TYREE NICHOLS DIED AND SHE FOUND HERSELF PRAYING FOR THE FIVE FORMER OFFICERS NOW CHARGED WITH HIS MURDER. AT THE END OF THE DAY, THIS SHOULDN’T HAVE HAPPENED. EARLY ON, POLICE SAID NICHOLS WAS PULLED OVER FOR ALLEGED RECKLESS DRIVING. NOW THEY SAY THEY SEE NOTHING TO SUBSTANTIATE PROBABLE CAUSE FOR THE STOP. OFFICIALS KNOW THIS VIDEO WILL INFURIATE SO MANY. YET NICHOLS LAWYERS SAY THE QUICK REACTION, FIRING OFFICERS FILING CHARGES IS THE RIGHT RESPONSE. THIS IS THE BLUEPRINT GOING FORWARD FOR ANY TIME, ANY OFFICERS, WHETHER THEY BE BLACK AND WHITE. NOW IS THE VIDEO IS MADE PUBLIC. TERESA NICHOLS IS FAMILY KNOWS PEOPLE ACROSS THE COUNTRY WILL GATHER. THEY IMPLORE IN PEACE, WILL NOT WANT ANY TYPE OF UPROAR. WE DO NOT WANT ANY TYPE OF DISTURBANCE. WE WANT PEACEFUL PROTESTS IN MEMPHIS. I’M CHRIS WINN REPORTING. PLENTY OF REACTION TO THE VIDEO COMING IN TONIGHT. EARLIER IN THE DAY, WINSTON-SALEM POLICE ISSUED A STATEMENT AHEAD OF THE VIDEO’S RELEASE. THE AGENCY SAYS IT HAS LISTENED TO THE CALLS FOR POLICE REFORM THAT WERE MADE IN 2020 FOLLOWING THE DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYD. ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR REFORM MOVEMENTS AT THE TIME WAS THE HASHTAG EIGHT CAN’T WAIT CAMPAIGN. IT PROVIDES A LIST OF EIGHT POLICY CHANGES THAT RESEARCH HAS SHOWN CAN REDUCE KILLINGS BY POLICE AND SAVE LIVES. IT BANS CHOKEHOLDS AND STRANGLE HOLDS REQUIRES A WARNING BEFORE SHOOTING A DUTY TO INTERVENE ALONG WITH REQUIRING A USE OF FORCE. CURRENT CONTINUUM RATHER DE-ESCALATION, EXHAUSTED. AND OF ALL ALTERNATIVES BEFORE SHOOTING. BANNING SHOOTING AT MOVING VEHICLES AND REQUIRING COMPRESS AND SIEVE REPORTING. THE DEPARTMENT SAYS IT HAS BEEN AND WILL CONTINUE TO PROTECT THE FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS OF ALL CITIZENS SHOULD THEY ELECT TO EXERCISE THEIR FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS. THE DEPARTMENT ENCOURAGES CITIZENS TO DO SO IN A PEACEFUL MANNER. AND WE ARE ALSO HEARING FROM THE NORTH CAROLINA BRANCH OF THE ACLU EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SHANTEL STEVENS STATEMENT READS IN PART, QUOTE, THE SHEER BRUTAL LOYALTY SHOWN IN THE VIDEO ONCE AGAIN PROVES HOW LITTLE PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE IN PREVENTING LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS FROM ASSAULTING AND KILLING BLACK AND BROWN PEOPLE WITH THE ASSUMPTION OF IMPUNITY. THE SWIFT TERMINATION AND CRIMINAL CHARGES FILED AGAINST THE OFFICERS RESPONSIBLE FOR MR. NICHOLS DEATH SHOULD BE THE RULE, NOT THE EXCEPTION. WHILE THESE ACTIONS ARE CORRECT AND WELCOME, THEY ARE NOT ENOUGH. AND YOU CAN READ MORE ABOUT WHAT THE VIDEO RELEASED BY POLICE SHOWS IN THIS STORY ON WXII 12 DOT COM AND DOWNLOAD THE WXII
