TCL has loaded the Ion X up with a nostalgic combination of smartphone features: a microSD card slot, a 3.5mm jack and a removable battery. Then again, its display and internal specs are on the low-end side, and it will not get 5G on its Metro service in the US. Accordingly, it goes for just under US$120 via its new carrier.

TCL asserts that its new Ion X' "robust" 3000mAh battery "will keep up with your daily demands and (sic) allow you go all day, worry-free". Then again, even if it does not, the user can just take its rear panel right off and swap it with another.

This increasingly rare spec that other OEMs might see as a throwback by now has indeed returned in the new mobile device, although there is also a USB type-C port (with profoundly standard 5V/2A charging) if strictly necessary.

Then again, the novelty may fail to power delight over time for some, thanks to the underwhelming 6-inch HD+ display to be sustained by its practically unique selling point.

Its single 13MP rear camera is joined by a 5MP selfie camera found in an extremely lesser-spotted sensor bar to match its sizeable chin.

This screen is also driven by an unprepossessing 4G/LTE-only MediaTek Helio G25 SoC and 3GB of RAM. Nevertheless, the Ion X might keep the classics going with a headpone jack and expandable memory, although the latter supports cards of 512GB in size at the most.

The Ion X also supports Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth. It is available in the US through Metro with 32GB of internal memory at a full price of US$119.
