Memphis-Shelby County Schools postponed Saturday athletics and other extracurricular activities, the district announced Friday evening as the city grappled with the release of footage of Tyre Nichols' fatal beating.

The district previously closed down and postponed all after-school events Friday.

"As we navigate a difficult moment for our community, please be mindful of the potential impact, especially for children," MSCS Superintendent Toni Williams said earlier Friday.

The school district shared tips for helping children through the traumatic event:

  • "Allow children to express their feelings and tell them it is okay to feel sad, upset, or stressed."
  • "Limit access so they have time away from reminders about the trauma."
  • "It's okay for children and youth to see adults sad or crying, but also make space with other adults to process and manage your own emotions."

A "school choice showcase" is rescheduled for Feb. 4.

New times and dates for events previously scheduled for Friday and Saturday have not yet been announced.
