Freshman Gabriela Cortes picks up Houston’s lone point of the match
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Tennis program dropped its home opener against Elon, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.
The Cougars (1-3) look to rebound at 9 a.m., Saturday against Texas State, followed by ULM at noon on Sunday. Admission is free for all Houston Tennis matches and no student claim is necessary. Live stats can be found here.
In doubles, Houston picked up the win on court two after Maria Dzemeshkevich and Azul Pedemonti defeated Elon's Julie Ball and Olivia Archer, 6-4.
Elon (2-1) evened things up after Sibel Tank and Lizette Reding followed with a 6-4 victory over Blanca Cortijo Parreno and Laura Slisane. The Phoenix clinched the doubles point after Madison Cordisco and Helen Sarikuluya came out on top with the 7-5 victory against Sonya Kovalenko and Sophie Schouten.
In her season singles debut, freshman Gabriela Cortes found herself in a battle on court six against Archer. After dropping the first set, 3-6, Cortes picked up the 6-3 second set victory, forcing a third set. Cortes clinched her first singles spring victory coming on top in the final set, 10-6.
