A $1.5 million grant has been awarded to El Paso County to build a new park in Horizon City.
"This funding will be used for a hike-and-bike trail, pavilion, picnic shelters, a garden, site amenities with ADA components, lighting, native landscaping, parking, sidewalks, interpretive signage, and site work," according to Senator César Blanco.
Other proposed developments include a playground with inclusive elements, playground surface, multi-sport courts, soccer fields and accessible outdoor fitness equipment.
The park will be located on Linwood Drive near Benfield Court.
It is estimated at 4.7 acres, which is part of an approximate 14.3-acre land donation to the county from the Horizon Communities Improvement Association, Inc. (HCIA)
"Access to recreational parks and the outdoors is essential to enhancing the physical and mental well-being and overall quality of life of our community. I thank TPW for this investment in our community," a statement from Blanco read.
The money for the Horizon View Park Project is from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission.
This community has been waiting for decades for a park to be built at this location,” said County Commissioner Iliana Holguin. “I am incredibly thankful to HCIA for donating the land to the County so that we can finally make this park a reality for this community. This grant from TPWD will help the County create a beautiful outdoor space for this community, and I am incredibly proud of how our community partners came together to make this dream a reality.
