A first proper look at new BBC thriller Better has been released in a trailer, which Digital Spy can exclusively bring you.

The new show, which is due to debut on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on February 13, focuses on a police officer in Leeds and her connection with a powerful member of the criminal underworld. It stars I Hate Suzie's Leila Farzad and Broadchurch's Andrew Buchan.

The first trailer gives an intriguing look of things to come, as Farzad's DI Lou Slack explains how Col McHugh (Buchan) started off as her informant, "but then he started to ask for little favours".

However, while she's built her career off the back of him and turned a blind eye to his illegal activities, she struggles over how much longer she can tolerate it.

"There's only one way out – he's got to go down," she adds.

The BBC explains that Better "explores the complex and powerful bonds of loyalty and family, set in a world where everyone has their own version of 'right' and 'wrong'".

Lou must bring down Col as she faces an epic battle toward redemption, having struck a deal 19 years ago that changed both their lives, with Col becoming rich and powerful and Lou able to turn around her failing career.

"A complex but special bond between the pair was forged, and so began Lou’s gradual slide into corruption," the synopsis adds. "But now, when Lou’s family is brought to the brink of a tragedy, she must put right the wrongs that she has spent years rationalising and excusing, to have a second chance at a new, better life."

Better has been written by Humans and Spooks' Jonathan Brackley and Sam Vincent, with direction by Jonathan Brough and Pier Wilkie.

Better will air weekly from Tuesday, February 13 at 9pm on BBC One and will be available as a boxset on BBC iPlayer.
