NBA Rumors: Pascal Siakam Wants to Stay with Raptors amid Deadline Trade Buzz

Mike Chiari

The Toronto Raptors are reportedly unlikely to deal star forward Pascal Siakam prior to the Feb. 9 NBA trade deadline despite rumors of a potential deal.

Speaking on his Don't Aggregate This podcast (h/t HoopsHype.com), NBA insider Jake Fischer said that while a Siakam trade is "not impossible," he would be "shocked" if it happened.

Fischer noted that Siakam "wants to be in Toronto," which is where he has spent his entire seven-year NBA career.

While rumors and speculation have run rampant regarding the Raptors possibly trading many of their top players, including Siakam, Fred VanVleet, O.G. Anunoby and Gary Trent Jr., nothing has happened yet.

Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer previously reported that league sources had "doubt" about Toronto moving Siakam since it would want a huge package in return, headlined by two or three unprotected first-round draft picks, or young players with similar talent levels.

The 28-year-old Siakam is perhaps the Raptors' best player, and that has been the case since Kawhi Leonard left in free agency before the 2019-20 season.

Siakam played a big role on the Leonard-led team that won a championship in 2018-19, and he has only gotten better since, earning his first All-Star selection in 2019-20, as well as All-NBA selections in 2020 and 2022.

The former New Mexico State standout seems like an All-Star shoo-in this season since he is averaging a career-high 25.2 points and 6.5 assists per game to go with 8.3 rebounds and 1.3 three-pointers made, while shooting 47.7 percent from the field and 31.9 percent from beyond the arc.

For as talented as the Raptors are, they have been a massive disappointment this season, as their 22-27 record has them in 12th in the Eastern Conference, although they are only a half-game out of a postseason play-in spot.

Even if the Raptors find a way to make the playoffs, it is difficult to envision them being a contender on the level of the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks or a healthy Brooklyn Nets team.

Because of that, it would make sense for the Raptors to be active at the trade deadline in an attempt to acquire future assets such as draft picks.

Siakam would likely land a sizable haul, but he is under contract through next season, so the Raptors don't need to move him this February.

Both VanVleet and Trent can become free agents after this season if they decline their player options, though, likely moving them to the front of the line in terms of players Toronto would be willing to move prior to the deadline.

Things have not gone according to plan for the Raptors this season, but retooling around a core of Siakam and reigning NBA Rookie of the Year Scottie Barnes could be a better path than a complete teardown.
