A Rochester City School District employee was heading to her car late Thursday afternoon when two teenagers approached her, one brandishing a large, sharp object, according to police.
The number of suspects turned out to be five — three 16-year-olds and two 14-year-olds.
Police said the teens ended up leading them on a chase. It started on Cameron Street around 6:30 p.m., before ending with a crash on a dead end at Otis Street and Mt. Read Boulevard.
The five teens allegedly fled the scene.
"Our officers quickly responded and set up a perimeter," Rochester Police Lt. Greg Bello said. "They were able to take all five juveniles into custody."
After the teens were taken into custody, two of the 16-year-olds were charged with robbery and larceny.
As the investigation continued, police discovered one of the suspects was connected to a stolen vehicle with two children in the back Jan. 12 on Lake Avenue.
"A mother had left her vehicle running while she ran into the corner store, and that vehicle is stolen with two children in the back," Bello said. "The investigation into that, and the investigation last night, also uncovered that one of the 16-year-olds that did the carjacking last night was also responsible for stealing the vehicle a few weeks ago on Lake Avenue."
The suspect is charged with grand larceny, unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child for the Jan. 12 incident.
Two suspects are being held at the Monroe County Children's Detention Center. The other three teens were released and referred to family court.
Both the Rochester City School District and the Board of Education Non-Teaching Employees (BENTE), the union representing the school secretary, both decline to comment and said they wanted to focus on the employee's well-being.
