POINTE COUPEE PARISH, La. (BRPROUD) — A Pointe Coupee Parish man was found guilty by a jury after three days in trial.
According to District Attorney Tony Clayton, Morris Hollins was arrested in 2021 for his connection in a shooting in New Roads. The victims were Hollins’ family members. Clayton says that Gerell Hollins was intoxicated and arguing with another family member when Morris pulled out a gun and shot him nine times.
Howard Hollins, a cousin, was attempting to escape but was shot in the back. Gregory Hollins, the father of Howard Hollins, was behind him and was shot in the hip. Both men were killed.
A stray bullet also struck the home of the neighbor, according to Clayton.
Clayton also says Morris Hollins was arrested in 2019 for the illegal use of weapons.
“This was a very tragic case that involved the murder of two young men who were cousins of the defendant and the attempted murder of his uncle,” said District Attorney’s
Office Chief of Trials Chad Aguillard. “Our hearts go out to the Hollins family who is very torn by this case. However, we feel that justice was served this week and that the jury got it right.”
Morris was found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder, one count of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated criminal damage to property, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
