COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A 64-year-old Coldwater woman was arraigned in Branch County District Court Friday afternoon on four felony counts after she allegedly shot her 33-year-old daughter during a domestic dispute.
Kathleen Rowe was arrested after the shooting at a home just north of Coldwater which was reported Thursday afternoon at about 4:30 p.m.. Branch County Prosecutors filed charges of discharging a firearm in a building causing serious impairment, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, felony firearm and felonious assault against Rowe.
Bond was set at $150,000 and not guilty pleas were entered on behalf of the defendant. The Branch County Sheriff’s Department investigated the shooting. The alleged victim, Kacey Stringer, was shot in the abdomen and was taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. At last report, she was said to be in stable condition.
According to Branch County court documents, Rowe told investigators she shot her daughter in self defense and that she was tired of her mental and physical abuse. She added she was fearful of her because of previous incidents. Both women gave different accounts of what happened before the shooting to investigators. The daughter admitted there was an argument but nothing physical happened.
The alleged victim claims her mother threw a drawer at her and had a knife prior to throwing the drawer and after throwing it, she went to retrieve the handgun. The daughter added that prior to the shooting, no threats were made by the mother. A probable cause hearing was scheduled for February 9 with a preliminary exam set for February 16.
