Pleasant Plains Authorities Searching For Alleged Counterfeiters

Beardstown Schools were placed on a soft lock down at mid-day today after local authorities searched for an armed suspect. According to a report from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, at 11:58AM, the Beardstown Police and Cass County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the 1300 block of Jackson Street in Beardstown for a man running with a weapon. Cass County Sheriff Devron Ohrn says in the release that due to the close proximity to schools and school-aged children, the schools were contacted to be placed on lock down. The incident was about 3/4 of a mile west of the Beardstown Jr./Sr. High School.

A Beardstown man is heading to prison after multiple arrests over the last month. 19 year old Mayout Dhal pleaded guilty to one count of robbery yesterday in Cass County Circuit Court. Dhal was arrested by members of the Beardstown Police and Cass County Sheriff’s Department on March 13th on the charge along with a charge of aggravated battery to a juvenile under the age of 13 causing great bodily harm.

Jacksonville Police and LifeStar EMS were paged out to a building strike at Top Shelf Liquor at approximately 9:30 am. According to a report by Jacksonville Police, 61-year-old Diane E. Vincent of Roodhouse told officers she felt a medical event coming on while behind the wheel of her white SUV and turned off Lincoln Avenue into the parking lot of Top Shelf Liquor in the 1200 block of West Morton Avenue. Vincent said she then started coughing and believed she had passed out. She said when she came to, her vehicle had struck the building.

The defense attorney of an EMT accused of first-degree murder in Springfield is again asking for his client’s bond to be reduced. The State Journal-Register reports that W. Scott Hanken, who represents Peggy J. Finley, filed an amended motion on Friday saying that statements made by the Earl Moore, Jr. family attorney Jennifer Hightower in court during a February 6th bond reduction hearing should be stricken from the record saying the statements were “highly improper, unsupported by law, and completely out of the scope of (the Crime Victims Bill of Rights).”

The second in a trio of former Illinois prison guards at Western Illinois Correctional Facility was sentenced today in federal court. 54 year old Todd Sheffler of Mendon was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison in the beating death of 65 year old inmate Larry Earvin in 2018. Sheffler was re-tried on charges in August after a jury failed to reach a verdict last April. The jury convicted Sheffler of conspiracy to deprive the civil rights, deprivation of civil rights, conspiracy to engage in misleading conduct, falsification of a document and misleading conduct.

Plans for the removal of a time capsule from the grounds of a state institution in Jacksonville are on hold for now. The Jacksonville Area Museum is planning to salvage a number of key items from JDC for preservation. Items include the time capsule that was buried on the grounds in 1997 just southwest of the Gillette Building.

Governor J.B. Pritzker has been touring the state touting his proposed investments in higher education. The annual fundraising event was again held at the Cured Catering facility located in the former McClellan dining hall on the MacMurray campus site, and after a three-year absence, dine-in service returned to the event on Monday.
