The Royal Philharmonic Society Awards has announced its 2023 shortlists.

For the purposes of this article, our focus will only be on vocal or opera-related topics and nominations.

Among those shortlisted for the Ensemble award, supported by Wise Music Group, are BBC Singers, Ensemble 360, and Manchester Collective.

The English National Opera’s Martyn Brabbins was among those nominated for the Conductor category; others include Robert Ames and Karina Canellakis.

In the Opera and Music Theatre category, supported by Jenny Hodgson, the nominees are Theatre of Sound and Opera Ventures’ “Bluebeard’s Castle;” Scottish Opera; Garsington Opera’s “Orfeo;” and English National Opera’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

In the singer category, supported by ISM, the nominees are Anna Dennis, Lise Davidsen, and Lucy Schaufer.

Finally, the nominees for Young Artists, supported by Sir Simon and Victoria, Lady Robey OBE, are soprano Nardus Williams, Tangram, and violist Timothy Ridout.

“With much recent reportage about funding cuts to the arts, what a story we have to share about classical musicians’ creativity, generosity and resilience. The RPS Awards shortlists represent thousands of musicians who devote their lives to uplifting, inspiring and uniting communities nationwide. We’re newly presenting the RPS Awards at the same time of year as the BAFTAs and BRITs, as classical musicians deserve as much recognition as pop acts and movie stars. Tickets have never been cheaper, from only £10, so we warmly invite music-lovers to come and be part of the festivities and help us make some noise,” Royal Philharmonic Society Awards Chief Executive James Murphy said in an official press statement.

The winners will be announced at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall on March 1, 2023.
