Alabama target and 5-star DB Ellis Robinson IV forecasted to Georgia

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart kisses the championship trophy after the national championship NCAA College Football Playoff game against TCU, Monday, Jan. 9, 2023, in Inglewood, Calif. Georgia won 65-7.

Alabama has been able to recruit from one of the country’s premier high schools with great success. Can it begin 2023 with another commitment from a blue-chip prospect via IMG (Fla.) Academy?

Multiple recruiting evaluators have predicted otherwise, forecasting Ellis Robinson IV to the two-time defending champions.

Georgia’s first national championship under Kirby Smart didn’t do much to change the recruiting status quo, with Alabama compiling a historic class with the two best players the Peach State had available in 2023. But with another title following a Tide-less College Football Playoff, Smart may be able to challenge Nick Saban and co. on the trail.

The Tide was amongst the five finalists Robinson announced during the Sugar Bowl. Robinson’s main points of contact with Alabama’s coaching staff have been Holmon Wiggins and Travaris Robinson.

Robinson IV is the No. 1 cornerback ranked on the 247Sports Composite and the 13th-best player in the 2023 class. He said this week he plans to announce his decision on Feb. 1. Georgia earned the final visit on Jan. 14, a follow-up from at least three trips last year. But even with Robinson’s initial decision next Wednesday, expect him to visit more schools throughout the calendar year before enrolling.

Georgia is the current favorite via On3 (65.3% to Alabama’s 30.3%) and 247 (two Crystal Ball predictions). The five-star has been a nationally scouted talent throughout his high school career — from Iona (N.Y.) Prep to Florida where he partnered with cornerback Desmond Ricks, the capper to the Tide’s 2023 class.

Since 2019, Nick Saban has signed six prospects from IMG with a few developing into starters like wideout Ja’Corey Brooks (2021) and offensive lineman Tyler Booker (2022). The Tide also prioritized defensive backs last cycle, signing five including two in the top 100.

Alabama currently has the fifth-ranked 2024 class with five commits, including Clay-Chalkville athlete Jaylen Mbakwe, who’s expected to play cornerback at the next level.
