United Way of Martin County launches Ride United program to provide free transportation for those in need
For many people in Martin County, taking a car ride to a simple destination, such as the dentist, is a quick and easy task. However, for those less fortunate, it can be a costly and time-consuming ordeal. That's where Ride United comes in.
Ride United is a program that was recently launched as part of a $6,500 grant given by United Way Worldwide to the United Way of Martin County. The program aims to connect eligible Martin County residents to free Lyft rides, helping them get to work, medical appointments, school, and food distribution sites, among other destinations.
"Transportation is a barrier for many of the people that we serve, and bringing this program to Martin County is going to help alleviate that," said Carol G. Houwaart-Diez, United Way of Martin County president and CEO.

For Lori Sang, whose charity provides free dental care to uninsured low-income children, Ride United offers a vital service. With the program, these children can receive the dental work they need without their families having to pay extra money.
"They were paying friends and family members to drive them to the dentist and charging, depending on where they lived, up to $80 round trip," she said.
Ride United now provides residents of Martin County with an opportunity to access places that many take for granted. The United Way of Martin County hopes to see the program grow as the year goes on.

In addition to the $6,500 grant from United Way National, a donor also matched the grant. The United Way of Martin County is looking to use the extra money to help those in need of important rides even more.
