Americans overwhelmingly approve of U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland’s decision to appoint a special counsel to oversee the case involving classified documents that were found in a former office of President Joe Biden.
The poll, conducted by CNN, found that 8 in 10 Americans believe Garland’s move was the right one.
That number proves consistent across party lines as well: 88% of Republicans, 84% of independents and 80% of Democrats all stand behind the decision.
Meanwhile, around two-thirds of respondents believe the mishandling of classified documents is a serious problem, and almost 60% registered disapproval of how the Biden administration dealt with the situation.
Former U.S. Attorney Robert Hur was put in charge of the investigation by Garland on January 12 after Biden’s team reported the presence of classified documents both in his private residence in Delaware and in an unsecured Washington, D.C., office that Biden used while serving as Vice President under Barack Obama.
Garland’s appointment of a special counsel for the Biden case came in the wake of his previous appointment of Jack Smith as special counsel in charge of the classified documents seized from former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, an extraordinary turn of events that came after months of denials from the Trump camp that he still had any classified materials.
