The North Carolina Department of Transportation said construction will start Monday, Jan. 30, on an 84-year-old bridge on N.C 106 in Macon County.
The bridge sits over Middle Creek, southwest of Scaly Mountain, less than two miles from the Georgia state line.
NCDOT said the bridge will be replaced with a modern structure to better facilitate travel for drivers. No long-term closures will be necessary, thanks to a traffic management plan developed by local NCDOT officials, and access to area roads, like Happy Hill Road and Highland Gap Road, will remain open.
Traffic will be controlled by portable traffic signals when traffic is reduced to one lane, and transportation officials remind drivers to slow down, remain alert and obey all posted signs when approaching and driving through the work zone.
Mountain Creek Contractors, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., will remove the existing bridge and replace it with the new one, which will measure 107 feet long and 43 feet wide. The $5.3 million contract calls for the project to be completed by Nov. 11, 2025.
