Isekai anime series are a dime a dozen. You can’t have a single series of anime these days anymore without tripping over six different isekai stories, or at the very least a Western fantasy-inspired tale with a title that’s as long as a sentence. In the case of The Misfit of Demon King Academy Ⅱ: History’s Strongest Demon King Reincarnates and Goes to School with His Descendants, short version The Misfit of Demon King Academy II, we have another isekai with a few more intriguing rounds of character development and situations that should keep you interested as the series wears on. From a man who thinks he’s god to some of the most adorable moe characters ever created, it always keeps you guessing. It doesn’t rely on every single trope the genre shares, thankfully, and that makes for a very fun watch. Season 2 delivers some pretty tasty morsels that go down quite smoothly. But you’ll only really be able to watch if you completed the first season, mind you. It’ll be near-nonsensical for anyone who goes in blind.

THE MISFIT OF DEMON KING ACADEMY II: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: The Great Spirit Mother Leno (Kana Asumi) walks through the forest, announcing to everyone that she has made up her mind to go to Delsgade. Tithi worries for her, and for good reason, as Leno meets Heavenly Father God NousGalia (Yuya Uchida) after he blasts her right in the face and says he wants to create a new “Child of God” as part of the “God clan” to vanquish the Demon King of Tyranny. If you haven’t seen the first season, none of this will make sense, but if you have? The hype train has pulled into the station.

The Gist: The first season of The Misfit of Demon King Academy follows the original light novel series, written by Shuuichi Shigeno. It centers on a powerful demon king named Anos Voldigoad (Tatsuhisa Suzuki) who, after being reincarnated in a new world, enrolls in a school for demon lords. Despite being one of the strongest beings in the world, Anos struggles to fit in with his classmates and prove himself as a worthy demon king. The first season surrounds Anos’s struggles as he navigates the politics and power struggles of the demon world while also trying to uncover the truth about his past life and the mysterious circumstances surrounding his reincarnation. Anos is a complex and powerful protagonist, and the series also features a diverse cast of interesting and well-developed supporting characters. Plus, when the series delves into the politics of the demon world, with the various power struggles and shifting alliances among the various demon lords, things tend to get more than a little interesting. Throw in the secrets surrounding Anos’s past life and the circumstances of his reincarnation, and you’ve got yourself a show you’ll binge in a weekend without even realizing it.

With all that out of the way, the following might actually make sense. At the end of the first season, Anos and his loyal team had defeated the mighty Jerga. THey saved all the humans under his control and brought the houses of Azeshion and Dilhade under relative control. Despite this, however, there are some who refuse to acknowledge Anos as their one true Demon King of Tyranny. In the opening scene where Anos appears and kills off the Heavenly Father God NousGalia, who’s trying to impregnate Leno, Anos has a plan for keeping the god from pouncing: ordering right-hand man Shin Reglia (Wataru Hatano) to remain by the Great Spirit Leno while she makes her way to the land of Delsegard. This gives us a little peek at a love story with Leno, but that doesn’t last long as a new, more powerful entity pops up: Anoshu Polticoal (Yuichiro Umehara).

With all this happening, the pilot explores what’s going on back at the Demon King Academy, introducing two new exchange students and a strange teacher, as well as a dilapidating relationship with the Blaze Death King, who ends up shaking things up more than a bit — with Anos noticing that “Erdomaid DittiJohn” happens to look a lot like the NousGalia he “slayed” at the beginning of the episode. We told you it was a lot if you hadn’t seen the first season.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Though there’s nothing 100% identical to this series, you’ll want to dig into shows like Konosuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World, No Game No Life, and Overlord, all of which feature reincarnations, fantasy battles, and unique politics and power struggles to each land. You’ll find that most of these series begin with an all-powerful protagonist and then build up from there, quite like Demon King has done, while adding in their own flourishes.

Our Take: The Misfit of Demon King Academy II does what it sets out to do quite well. It gripped viewers with a solid first season and came back for an encore with even more reasons to remain on Anos’s good side. The second season complicates things in massive way but builds on the already solid foundation the first one built. Things get decidedly hairy within minutes of the episode airing, and it’s difficult to get a read on exactly what’s going to go down throughout the season. Sex and Skin: Given that one character wants to forcibly impregnate another within the first few moments of the episode, there are implications that would make this series slightly inappropriate for younger viewers, as well as some of the scantily-clad female characters. Parting Shot: Anos teleports inside of a tower, where it appears he’s too late to save his target — Ziek Ozma is there gloating over his assumed victory, and he and Anos have it out for a moment, with Ziek challenging Anos before the episode comes to a close. Sleeper Star: Anos’s new voice actor Yuichiro Umehara, who debuted this season, does a fantastic job taking on the job his predecessor abdicated. If you didn’t know there was a change, it would be difficult to tell. He’s settled in perfectly to the role and he feels like a natural fit. Most Pilot-y Line: “Time for you to record this into your so-called order,” says Anos as he very quickly ends one seemingly immortal antagonists’ life — an unexpected death minutes into the first episode. Well, that’s one problem we won’t have to worry about anymore…or will we?

Our Call: STREAM IT. This is another heaping helping of one of the better isekai series out there, from the animation and voice cast to all the intricate little details that work together to create an important and exciting back story for Anos and his followers. If you’ve been waiting for a reason to jump into this series, consider the second season a worthy excuse.
