Lockwood & Co spoilers follow.

When it comes to the fight against supernatural ghouls, America has been lucky enough to have home-grown Ghostbusters to call their own. But what about us? Brits get haunted too, you know!

Thankfully, Netflix levelled the playing field by bringing us Lockwood & Co, a new adaptation of Jonathan Stroud's YA book series. With Attack the Block's Joe Cornish aboard on writing and directing duties, the only "problem" we've got is eight episodes just aren't enough for season one.

With that in mind, grab some salt bombs and join us here at Digital Spy as we break down everything you need to know about Lockwood & Co's mooted second season on Netflix.

Sadly no: Netflix confirmed (via Variety) that they won't be moving forward with a second season. Boo!

Complete Fiction, the production company behind the show, made an official statement confirming the news.

"With heavy hearts, we announce that Lockwood & Co. will not be returning for a second series. Making this show was one of the most rewarding experiences of our careers and we will forever treasure it. Being trusted by the supremely talented Jonathan Stroud to adapt his outstanding series of books was an honour and a privilege. Working with him as closely as we did across the development, production and release of Lockwood & Co has made him a friend, and part of the Complete Fiction family, for life."

"We are particularly proud of the gifted young actors who brought Jonathan’s beloved fictional characters to the screen with such warmth, charm and vulnerability. Ruby, Cameron and Ali were our perfect Lucy, Lockwood and George."

"We couldn’t have asked for a more dedicated or talented trio. All three are superstars and we can’t wait to see them shine in the dazzling bright future that undoubtedly awaits them. We want to thank our breathtakingly talented cast and crew for the dedication and top-level craft they brought to this production."

Netflix has been on what we can only describe as a cancellation spree recently, so the adaptation needed to pull in some hefty viewing figures if it has a shot at coming back for more.

There is a remote possibility that another streamer will pick up the show, to allow it to continue, but we stress remote.

Series creator Joe Cornish recently confirmed that season one covers the first two books in Stroud’s five-book series, telling Empire: "So there’s definitely a couple more seasons in the books."

If another streamer did give the show that all-important renewal, Cornish says that the ongoing story will be guaranteed to satisfy viewers.

"The story in the books is very well-plotted," he explained. "Jonathan Stroud solidifies the world and thinks of clever ways to explore it the more the books go on. It really goes somewhere, and it does have an end. So yeah, we’d love to do more."

Lockwood & Co season 2 cast: Who would be in it?

If another streamer ends up renewing Lockwood & Co, we can expect to see the majority of the following cast members return for season two:

• Ruby Stokes as Lucy Carlyle
• Cameron Chapman as Anthony Lockwood
• Ali Hadji-Heshmati as George Karim
• Ivanno Jeremiah as Inspector Barnes
• Morven Christie as Penelope Fittes
• Jemma Moore as Annabel Ward
• Jack Bandeira as Quill Kipps
• Hayley Konadu as Flo Bones
• Rhianna Dorris as Kat Godwin
• Paddy Holland as Bobby Vernon
• Rico Vina as Ned Shaw

Ben Crompton might show up again as Julius Winkman, but only if he makes it out of prison after what happened in season one's finale.

Luke Treadaway would almost certainly return in season two as the Golden Blade, a mysterious mercenary who has ties to Lockwood's dead parents that are just begging to be explored.

And that means we might also get a glimpse of the parents themselves, perhaps as ghosts or in flashback form. Casting options for them remain to be seen, though.

Lockwood & Co season 2 plot: What would have happened?

Lockwood & Co's finale ended the first arc with a few unanswered questions. Chief among them is what really happened to Lockwood's parents. At the start of the show, we find out that they're both dead, but Anthony's encounter with the Golden Blade hints that there's a lot more to this backstory than meets the eye. Not even Anthony himself knows exactly what's going on at present.

The other big plot point that demands an answer comes in the form of Lockwood's mysterious room upstairs. All season long, he's kept it locked up tight and warned the others that they should never try and see what's inside. But finally, eight episodes later, Anthony decides it's time to open the room up and show his teammates what he's been hiding.

Unfortunately, the credits roll in just as the door swings open, so the contents of this room remain a mystery for now. Either Lockwood's hiding something super embarrassing, or he's actually protecting the others from something dangerous tucked away inside.

Our money's on the latter, but what this could be remains up in the air. Perhaps there's a portal of some kind, or maybe another magic artefact that's somehow even more dangerous than the mirror?

Or maybe, just maybe, Lockwood's parents are stuffed in there, mummified. It's anyone's guess at this point.

Lockwood & Co is now available to stream on Netflix.
